Avalara for Communications

Calculate telecommunications taxes on quotes and invoices with the Avalara for Communications (AFC) plugin.

The Avalara for Communications (AFC) plugin adds telecommunications taxes to quotes and invoices. It works alongside a sales tax plugin such as Avalara AvaTax: charges marked as telecom charges are taxed by AFC, and the rest by your sales tax plugin.

Go to Settings > Integrations and select Avalara For Communications (AFC). Enter the details from your AFC account:

  • Client ID, Client Profile ID, Username and Password - Your AFC credentials.
  • Customer Type - The customer type sent to AFC: 0 Residential, 1 Business, 2 Senior Citizen or 3 Industrial. See Avalara’s definitions.
  • Sandbox environment? - Use AFC’s sandbox while you test.
  • Enable client side logging? - Record AFC’s responses for troubleshooting.
  • Report in USD? - Report all taxes in USD instead of the invoice’s currency.

Save, then turn on the integration.

On each price list charge that AFC should tax, turn on Is a telecom charge? and fill in:

  • Avalara AFC Transaction Type and Avalara AFC Service Type - The AFC transaction and service type for the charge.
  • Avalara AFC Sale Type - 0 Wholesale, 1 Retail, 2 Consumed (sales and use only) or 3 Vendor use.

Only telecom tax plugins are used to calculate taxes on telecom charges.
